Sunday Sessions

1PM TO 4PM, ARK GLOBE ACADEMY, SE1 6AF

Having gained four years’ worth of experience working within the Women’s university Cricket environment, we recognised that, unlike KCL, women from several other universities did not have the opportunities to have a full sided women’s cricket team. This was due to lack of numbers to form a team (leading to integrated mixed cricket training sessions) or a lack of funding available to put the relevant infrastructure in place.

To overcome this, we were granted funding from the Surrey Cricket Foundation to set up regular training and matches on Sundays. We have provided these opportunities for young women from the London School of Economics (LSE), University College London (UCL), St Mary’s University and Imperial College London in addition to the work we continue to do with KCLWCC.

Kings College Women’s Cricket Club (KCLWCC)

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, during which sessions were severely disrupted, we had been running weekly coaching sessions for women from King’s College London and hope to return once restrictions allow.

These weekly sessions, run at The Oval, home to Surrey County Cricket Club, led to the formation of one the largest women’s cricket clubs at a London University. Catering to all abilities, the sessions provide a first taste of cricket for those who have never played before, as well as numerous competitive opportunities provided by the “Smash It” indoor Surrey cricket leagues.

The Trailblazer Trophy

In 2019, as part of the Sunday sessions, we founded the Trailblazer Trophy. Drawing inspiration from franchise cricket, we formed 5 teams, each with a mix of players from the different universities. The league featured regular, competitive, but friendly, match days where the players had the opportunity to put their skills into practice.

Having collected individual player statistics from across the 2019 competition, we plan to run a player draft in 2020 to add another level of fun and entertainment to the league – watch this space!

From September 2020, we plan to expand and offer our services to reach even more universities in the county providing competitive cricket training and matches, with the potential to expand the project across east and west London.
